Initiative 1639 comes into full effect on July 1, 2019. Please sign this open letter to Washington voters thanking them for helping make our schools and communities safer!
Today is an historic day for Washington and for the gun violence prevention movement.
We write to thank the 1.8 million voters from every corner of Washington state who passed Initiative 1639 in November to help keep us safe from gun violence in our classrooms, our homes, and our communities.
Gun violence has become a tragic reality of modern American life. The threat of it follows us to concerts and nightclubs, to our houses of worship, our workplaces, and our schools. But today, Washington schools and communities become safer from the threat of gun violence as Initiative 1639 takes full effect.
Initiative 1639 is the most comprehensive gun violence prevention measure in state history. Its life-saving provisions, which strengthen rules for semi-automatic assault rifles and incentivize secure storage of all firearms, will help prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands.
In passing this law, Washingtonians sent a message loud and clear that enough is enough. We must and we will continue fighting to make our schools and communities safer from the scourge of gun violence.
